The smoke chamber is a funneled area above the fireplace damper, and it’s shaped to streamline the passage of smoke and other byproducts up into the chimney.
We use highly insulating, top of the line products and expert techniques to repair and restore smoke chambers through a process known as parging. Parging simply means we apply an insulating, high-temperature refractory mortar to the interior of the smoke chamber, coating it and sealing all gaps, cracks, and holes. This process also smooths over rough spots and can be used to reshape smoke chambers and bring them up to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and IRC codes.
Some of the things that can negatively impact the performance and safety of the smoke chamber include:
- deterioration caused by sulfuric acid (formed by creosote and moisture)
- corbel steps and jagged, rough spots
- gaps, holes, and cracks
- inadequate insulation
- bad design
